Goose update
I made it home a little before dark tonight and caught sight of the baby geese. They have almost lost all of their yellow feathers, only a little remains around their necks and heads.

Spring has sprung!
Despite my pollen allergies which make me hide inside.....I love this time of year, it is so pretty out.

backyard

Although, I think this qualifies me being officially down a tree. I had not realized that it was still living after all of the previous efforts of the beaver - otherwise I would have tried to wrap it somehow. But now it is a lost cause I do believe.

wildlife destruction, again

And now there are baby geese!! Thank goodness for the zoon on my camera lens, because there is no getting near these guys.

So far, I have counted five. Not sure if one will survive as it seems to be a little smaller and not moving as well as the others. I know it is a survival of the fittest thing and all, and I can't actually get to it to see if it is ok without definitely freaking all of them out and more than likely hurting me. But at this moment, it is sitting out in the sun eating grass so it can't be all that bad.

And now I am sneezing and hiding inside again. Housework soon to follow. Hope the sun is shining where you are!

rain, rain go away......
It is a gloomy day in the South today. Rainy most of the day, now just gray and damp. I just want to sleep and catch up on my NCIS watching! My wheel is calling me, but I am still able to ignore it for now. My stitching is my obsession for the moment, so here are some progress pics.

I watched Judith Mackenzie McCuin's Wheel Mechanics while I was down with a stomach bug. It was great!!! It and some other recent happenings got me inspired to do a little bit of shopping on etsy. Gale's Art is an indie dyer in Georgia - I got some merino silk and alpaca silk. She was running a special that included some silk hankie butterflies that are just beautiful!!!

In noncrafty news there has been lots of wildlife sightings...."water turkey," turtles of all shapes and sizes, and of course the geese. No sign of baby geese at this point.

Water TurkeyGoosewatch Continues

There's just something about watching a cat sleep.

Lounging

Her brother will be heading back to the doc at the end of the week for another checkup. It is really hard to tell how he is doing, he hides it pretty well. But he is still eating and demanding attention, so I really can't complain.

Hopefully another update this weekend!!

Sick with a Capital ICK
I hab a cold. It's sorta a bad one, low grade fever, coughing.

The commercials that say "take this, and get on with your life" are lying plain and simple. I feel like crap, sound scary, and just want to take a nap.

Needless to say, I'm not doing turkey-day feasting at my house.

Which is disappointing.

But for the best on a number of levels.

As always when I don't blog, the month has been busy with lots of work, beaver attacks, touring a quilt show, participating in a garage sale, and continued decluttering and yard prettying. Giving all the gory details probably isn't necessary, so moving on!

Educational content! Here is what a fully grown beaver can do:

tree damage

The "twin" of this tree had already been gnawed down by the beastie and has already started growing back. Sadly, this one keeps hanging on, but I think its days are numbered.

And now for knitting - progress on my second "first" sock!!

sock progress 11-22-09

I completed the leg and did the heel flap over the weekend before the cold settled in. After that, my brain could not focus on the gusset, so I set it aside and have slept and watched more movies than is healthy.

That's all for now! Time for some chicken soup!!!

November already?
It is Sunday again. And its November. Wow, where did my year go???

At least knitting progress have been made! My second "first sock" is slowly approaching the heel. Very slowly! Apologies in advance on the bad pics....my camera is hiding so these are indoor evening iPhone pics.

I'm also working on Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's Pretty Thing, using a sport weight Bison Bamboo blend from Fiber Isle. After a false start, I am enjoying the pattern and adoring the softness that is this yarn.

In non-knitting news, I picked up some fresh flowers when I went to the grocery store this weekend. I love getting them, but rarely do because I am hardly home this time of year so I really don't get to enjoy them. The vase was my grandmother's and I think of her every time I see it.

House projects have stalled. I need to get a move on this week, the AC man has been scheduled, but the handyman, painter, and carpet cleaner have not. The beav has made his presence known again, going after a smallish tree. Not sure if he has killed this one or not, but I did break out the "beaver repel" in the form of a strobe light tonight to see if it will protect the three crepe mrytles and the tree that leans over the waterway. No picture, but just stare into a flashlight as you turn it on and off and you get the feel for it. I hope it isn't aggravating my neighbors (as it is in full view of their house), but plenty aggravating to this unpredictable beastie!

All for now! I need to rest my tired eyes and hands for a busy work week!!!

Long time no blog!!
Yeah, its me again. The incredibly slacking blogger! August and September were filled with vacation and house projects. Here's a quick mosaic of some of the pictures I actually remembered to take!

Been busy

From left to right, top to bottom: completed seafoam scarf, the beach, knitting at the beach, Hemlock Ring #1, first completed tapestry using handspun, my newly mulched back bed, Hemlock Ring #2, yet another murderous beaver attack, daylillies being transplanted.

As you can see, house projects continue to progress, albeit extremely slowly! I did get the back bed finally filled with mulch, after the beaver came back and finally killed the tree he came after 15 months before! It has opened up that bed greatly, and my dad planted some crepe myrtles around the stump. Hopefully the rodent won't be back too quickly, these plants are far too low for me to get an adequate fence around. The culvert repair that was on this list has been completed. As has restaining the front door and repairing wood rot around the back door.

I think I have finally finished moving mulch around the house, so have collapsed on the couch to blog. Instead of preparing for the briefing I have in the morning. Guess that will be tonight's problem. In the meanwhile, I need pain killers. Hemlock #2 needs blocking so a trip to the LYS is in order for some afterhours cat-free blocking time.

More plans and schemes on the way!!!

Goosewatch 2009 - Mission Accomplished
So last Sunday, I noticed some movement around the nest, but the light was bad. This week, I was able to catch some pictures of the new goose family on the lake before the bad rainstorms. There were FIVE baby geese!

IMG_0639

They were across the "inlet" between my neighbors and my yards. I tried to not disturb them but nonetheless, Papa Goose was doing a very good job blocking my view.

IMG_0636

I'm glad I was able to get these shots, they did not go back to the nest after Monday. And we have had torrential rainstorms so they could be hanging out most anywhere on the lake at this point. Hopefully they will swim by at some point.

Random fibery goodness
After rearranging all of my fiber, I told myself to dial down the fiber purchases, because, well, I haven't really spun all that much lately. So I behaved like an adult, and canceled my wonderful fiber of the month club.

And then my friend Silver posted that she was loading her shop with lots of goodies. And my willpower failed me. And two braids of superwash landed on my doorstep on Monday. But they are very pretty!!!!!!!

In other news, the goose is still on her nest

Goosewatch 2009
Remember this mention of the goose pair? Well, they decided to make a nest right by that pine tree in the back yard. And then proceeded to ignore it for days.

Until now. So I took advantage of an unsupervised moment to take this quick pic,

IMG_0536

while the pair headed for me with much splashing and honking. I saw at least one egg under that straw (look at the stick on the right hand side, then look at the center of the nest, about the level of the top of that stick).

IMG_0537

Blurry shot as I was backing up while taking it. Which was good as he started to fly at me after that. So I left them checking to make sure I had not injured their pre-hatched young.

The other wildlife that likes to abuse me (aka the beavers) appear to have abandoned their home. Willingly or unwillingly, I have no clue. But, it means that the irises don't have to have protection and I can maybe screen in my porch!!!

While I wandered tarjey today, I looked at some possible porch furniture. It likely won't fit, and is a bit cost prohibitive at the moment, but I can dream! For some reason, I seem to be in a wicker mood at the moment....
